When it's needed

In New York, an asbestos survey by a New York State certified asbestos inspector is required before demolition, renovation, remodeling, or repair work.[A-02]

A building without a survey must be assumed to contain asbestos and handled as an asbestos project, whatever its construction date, and state exemptions do not override federal EPA or OSHA requirements.[A-02]

Federal rules also require the owner or operator of a demolition or renovation to thoroughly inspect the affected facility for asbestos before work begins, for all facilities except residential buildings with four or fewer dwelling units.[A-03]

What's included

  • Residential and commercial inspections, bulk material sampling, and pre-renovation and pre-demolition surveys.
  • A report with the scope, inspected areas, observations, sample locations and IDs, laboratory results, limits, photographs, and next steps.

What helps us quote it

  • The property or unit, the project purpose and affected areas, building information, access, any plans, known prior results, and your schedule.

See preparing for your inspection.

Limits

Bulk samples are analyzed by polarized light microscopy, the reference method for building materials, at an accredited laboratory.[A-07][Q-01]

Not included: school (AHERA) work, asbestos management plans, abatement, and any area or project scope that was not agreed and inspected.

Your report

We explain the findings and the limits of the inspection. Lab results: samples go to an accredited lab; standard turnaround is typically 3–5 business days. Rush turnaround (typically 12–48 hours) is available at an additional cost; we can talk through options during your inspection. We generally complete and review your report within 24–48 hours of receiving the lab results. Payment is required before the report is released. These are typical timeframes, not guarantees. Lab schedules and holidays can affect them, and we'll keep you posted if anything changes.

See understanding your report.
